Job Duties
The Unit Manager plays a vital role in advancing the Virginia Department of Corrections’ public safety mission by leading the operations of one or more housing units within a major correctional facility. This position ensures the delivery of effective, evidence-based reentry programming and services through close collaboration with security, treatment, maintenance, and support staff. The Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing inmate classification, discipline, programming, security operations, audit compliance, and the maintenance and sanitation of assigned units. This role provides direct supervision to Lieutenants and Casework Counselors, ensuring a safe, secure, and rehabilitative environment.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess strong knowledge of correctional facility operations, policies, and procedures. They will demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, inmates, and external stakeholders. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to prepare detailed reports and deliver presentations to diverse audiences. Additionally, the candidate must have a proven ability to assess complex situations and make sound, timely operational decisions.
Additional Considerations
Experience effectively communicating with all levels of institutional staff, inmates, and inmate family members. Working knowledge of security and treatment within an adult correctional setting. Working knowledge of evidence-based research and practices for prison operations. Working knowledge of reentry programs and services available to inmates. Experience supervising correctional staff.
