Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Weights and Measures, is seeking an individual to serve as Weights and Measures Regional Supervisor. The regional territory includes Accomack, Amelia, Brunswick, Caroline, Charles City, Chesapeake, Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Emporia, Essex, Franklin City, Gloucester, Goochland, Greensville, Hampton, Hanover, Henrico, Hopewell, Isle of Wright, James City, Kind and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Matthews, Middlesex, New Kent, Newport News, Norfolk, Northampton, Northumberland, Nottoway, Petersburg, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George, Richmond City, Richmond County, Southampton, Suffolk, Surry, Sussex, Virginia Beach, Westmoreland, Williamsburg and York. Duties include enforcing Weights and Measures Law and related regulations; supervising an administrative position; and managing up to seven (7) inspectors who test, inspect, and determine the accuracy of small weighing/measuring devices, including fuel motor dispensers. Duties also include administrative functions such as documenting activities, reviewing inspection/investigation summaries, training regional inspection staff, conducting and coordinating investigation activities relative to consumer complaints, providing technical expertise, assessing the quality of field activities, routine record keeping, and serve as the WinWam Coordinator which oversees, up-dates, synchronizes, creates reports and performs risk analysis for the weights and measures inspection computer program. This position is expected to work in the field regularly with inspectors and may require occasional overnight travel. The selected applicant must reside in or be willing to relocate within a reasonable distance from the regional territory.

Minimum Qualifications

Comprehensive knowledge of and ability to understand/interpret assigned laws, regulations, and inspection procedures. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to implement all applicable inspection procedures. Ability to supervise assigned staff and address regional workload issues through effective planning and scheduling. Ability to operate assigned equipment. Basic mechanical ability. Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems, gather information, anticipate problems, investigate the validity of information, weigh consequences, and make sound decisions. Proficiency with standard office software applications is required. Ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis, bend as needed, distinguish colors and exhibit manual dexterity, and be willing to work outside in various weather conditions. Must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license and have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety. High School Diploma or equivalent required

Any combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of business, criminal justice, agricultural sciences, or a related field is desirable in addition to experience in supervision, enforcement, inspection, or investigative activities in a regulatory environment.
