Job Duties

The Science Museum of Virginia is seeking a part-time Grounds Maintenance Technician. The Grounds Maintenance Technician plays a vital role in maintaining the clean, safe and welcoming appearance of the Science Museum of Virginia campus. This position is responsible for ensuring all outdoor areas including walkways, entrances, parking lots, landscaped spaces and event areas are well maintained and inviting for guests year-round. Duties include emptying outdoor trashcans, cleaning and upkeep of sidewalks and exterior surfaces, removing debris and litter, maintaining landscaping and grounds equipment, and organizing tools and supplies. In this role you will also assist the Horticulturist by watering, pruning and trimming plants, as well as assisting with volunteer groups, seasonal maintenance and facility projects. Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. A valid driver’s license is required. The role requires general knowledge of professional landscape maintenance practices, grounds equipment and the safe operation of the same. Must be able to follow instructions related to breakdown and reassembly of landscaping equipment. Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions year around. Requires the ability to lift and carry groundskeeping supplies and other equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis. This role requires prolonged walking or standing, frequent bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching on a daily basis. Must be able to work a rotating weekend schedule.

Additional Considerations

At least one year of residential, commercial, municipal, park, or similar turf, horticulture or arboriculture experience is a plus. VDACS Pesticide Registered Technician or Commercial Applicator certification in category 3A or 3B is a plus.
