Job Duties

The Office of the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Director with the Department of Magistrate Services. This position will assist the department director in oversight of the day-to-day operations of the magistrate system for the Judicial System of Virginia.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work with the department director to oversee and coordinate the provision and administration of magistrate services statewide. Duties may include development and delivery of training for magistrate system personnel, interaction with stakeholders on magistrate related issues, participation in policy-making decisions for the magistrate system, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The most competitive applicants will demonstrate extensive knowledge of criminal and civil procedure and substantive criminal law including the structure and operation of the Virginia magistrate system. Management experience and proven leadership skills including oversight of professional staff to ensure a unified application of policies and procedures, project management, resource allocation, and strategic planning is required. The ability to effectively communicate with all levels of individuals is essential.

An understanding of and demonstrated expertise in the use of current information technology platforms, as well as the ability to perform environmental scanning to determine need and adaptability of other technology and resources is required.

Position will be based in Richmond and may require travel throughout the state.

Additional Considerations

Experience in the Virginia Magistrate system or comparable experience in the criminal justice system is preferred. Extensive experience with the Virginia Judicial system is preferred. Graduation from an accredited school of law and a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar or otherwise eligible for licensure is preferred.
