Job Duties

 

Minimum Qualifications

The demonstrated ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching and work with students and inmate aides in a classroom/Lab environment. The demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records; Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education. Must possess working knowledge of basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs. Experience in maintaining classroom, equipment, and inventories; Demonstrate competency in the related field of current trade licensure.

High School Diploma or equivalent. Must have at least two years' full time or 2000 hours of verifiable experience in the last 5 years in the relevant field/trade area for a teaching certificate.
License: Must be eligible for an Industrial/Technical Professional License/Certification in the relevant trade area/field. Must be eligible for a teaching certificate by the Department of Education.
If you do not currently hold a teachers/trade license from the Department of Education (DOE):
1. You must submit all documentation for your provisional license to the licensure designee for Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) during the first 90 days of employment.
2. Obtaining a provisional license within the 1-year probationary period is employee’s responsibility and is required to continuing employment at the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC).

Additional Considerations

Experience in correctional education classroom management. Five years experience in the related trade/field. License: Must have a Industrial/Technical Professional License/Certification in the relevant trade area/field. Must have a teaching certificate by the Department of Education. Knowledge of all phases of the trade area; ability to supervise adult in-mates in a classroom/lab environment. Knowledge of correctional education classroom management. The ability to facilitate other instructors; knowledge of the Department of Corrections (DOC) institutional policies and procedures and policies governing correctional education.
