Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

DJJ is currently hiring a Facility Compliance Safety Officer. This position will ensure the Virginia Public Safety Training Center (VPSTC), which is owned and operated by DJJ, is in compliance with all workplace safety regulations. The role will administer preventive safety measures for the welfare of staff, students, and visitors; deliver workplace safety training and consult with various agency organizational units (such as court services units (CSUs)), throughout the Commonwealth, regarding workplace safety matters.

Job responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Ability to travel throughout the state, to deliver training and/or provide consultation regarding workplace safety.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor policy and procedures, to communicate verbally and in writing, respectfully and professionally at all levels, and provide exceptional customer service.

A valid driver's license is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of current fire prevention and safety Federal, State, and local health codes, regulations, laws, and practices.
  • Knowledge of chemical storage, application, and waste disposal regulations.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention, safety, and sanitation standards, and in the development and implementation of procedures in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Ability to develop and deliver fire prevention and other safety-related training programs.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and scheduling a diverse and multi-faceted workload and to determine and set priorities.

Additional Considerations

  • Comparable training and experience in safety management, accident investigation, and/or industrial hygiene.
  • Related experience in training, fire prevention, sanitation and safety procedures, program development, computer operation, and chemicals.
  • Experience developing and delivering training material for an adult audience, utilizing a variety of training interventions, as well as curriculum design and presentation software.
