Job Duties
The Licensing Inspector is responsible for conducting inspections, investigations, and compliance reviews of licensed child care centers, family day homes, and other regulated care settings. This position ensures that facilities operate in accordance with Virginia’s child care licensing regulations and standards, with a focus on health, safety, staffing, and program operations. The Inspector documents findings, issues corrective actions when necessary, and provides guidance to providers to support regulatory compliance and continuous improvement. By maintaining a consistent presence in the field and collaborating with child care operators, the Licensing Inspector plays a key role in safeguarding children and supporting the Department’s commitment to high-quality care across the Commonwealth.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of developmental, social, emotional, health/medical needs of children served in regulated programs.
- Skill in working effectively within difficult and hostile situations to provide quick responses and resolve problems.
- Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations, both orally and in writing, and work collaboratively and cooperatively with others.
- Ability to operate basic office and mobile computer systems/programs.
- Knowledge of evidence collection practices and analysis techniques.
Additional Considerations
- Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in human services, public administration, child development, related practice or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is preferred.
- Experience preparing for or conducting facility licensing inspections
- Education or equivalent experience as a program director in child care
- Successful completion of fingerprint-based criminal history background check and a valid driver's license
