ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center (A Great Place, Doing Great Things, Because of Great People!) is seeking applicants to fill a Security Officer position in our newly established Campus Security Department. This is a full-time/salaried position with benefits. Examples of benefits provided include paid time off that includes 13 holidays, annual leave, sick and personal leave. ABOUT THE POSITION
The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that the Center is a safe environment for academic classes and a variety of events by routinely patrolling the Center building and grounds, responding to emergency situations, enforcing rules and policies, assisting visitors and employees, reporting potential hazards for follow-up, monitoring for suspicious activities, conducting periodic safety drills, inspecting life safety equipment, completing incident reports and logs, following standing security orders and policies, and the delivery of mail and parcels inside the facility as needed. The security officer will be required to carry a firearm (handgun) in the performance of their official duties and maintain eligibility to do so as an ongoing condition of employment. The selected candidate will also serve as a liaison to area police, fire, rescue, and emergency response agencies and seek to develop and maintain relationships with these agencies. The security officer’s primary work schedule will be from 3pm-11pm, Monday through Friday, but the incumbent may also be required to work a variable schedule (including mandatory overtime) as this position is essential for security operations.
Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the responsibilities and professional conduct of armed security officers and the methods used in providing armed security services.
• Physical ability and willingness to engage with potentially combative/aggressive persons.
• Ability to handle public safety and security issues as they arise in an appropriate and timely manner.
• Ability to provide emergency care and assistance to any individual who is hurt, injured, or becomes ill while at the Center.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment, prepare complete and effective reports, and communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
• Ability to testify in court proceedings when needed.
• Ability to stand and patrol the building and grounds on foot for extended periods of time.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
• Ability to work as part of a team environment.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Knowledge and experience with computer applications in order to prepare reports, effectively operate electronic security camera software, door access control systems, and other electronically controlled building support systems.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Ability to work independently and use sound judgment.

Special Requirements:
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must be a United States citizen or a legal resident alien of the United States.
• Must be able to lawfully possess and carry a firearm (handgun) in compliance with applicable law and as a condition of employment.
• Must posses a Virginia DCJS armed security officer certification with current firearms (handgun) endorsement.
• Must posses a Virginia resident or non-resident concealed handgun permit.
• Must possess a valid driver's license in order to operate a state vehicle.
• Must possess current basic first aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications.
• Finalists for this position will be required to undergo a criminal history background check, which will include fingerprinting and a background inquiry.
• Must possess the ability to lift/move moderate to heavy weight up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
• The incumbent must be able to work a variable schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Overtime may also be required.
