Job Duties

New College Institute (NCI) is a premier center of learning that provides access to academic degrees, credentials and professional learning experiences in high quality learning environments to prepare students for regional and statewide career opportunities and participation in collaborative, positive community change, promoting regional economic prosperity and community transformation.

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide housekeeping and janitorial services for all properties and assets owned or leased by the institution, ensuring smooth operations and maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness. The role involves a variety of custodial tasks, including but not limited to vacuuming, dusting, mopping, cleaning restrooms, windows, mirrors, tiles, and carpeted floors, as well as furniture in classrooms, lecture halls, and common areas as needed. The incumbent of this position may also be responsible for tasks such as cleaning agency vehicles; assisting with the setup and breakdown of conference rooms and classrooms; arranging furniture; moving equipment; and preparing spaces for meetings or classes.

This is an hourly/wage position with no benefits and is limited to working on average no more than 29 hours per week (1,500 hours per year from May 1 – April 30). Multiple positions will be filled from this job announcement. While we aim to accommodate employees' needs and preferences for scheduled hours, this position requires some shift flexibility. The role will primarily be scheduled for evenings/nights and weekends, with additional coverage needed during some holidays. To ensure comprehensive cleaning coverage during all operating hours, we must have coverage for days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Responsibilities may also include tasks performed approximately one hour before or after operating hours.

Minimum Qualifications

The incumbent should possess knowledge of standard cleaning methods, materials, chemicals, equipment, and related safety practices. Skills required include the ability to operate custodial equipment efficiently, perform a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks with attention to detail, and manage time effectively to meet operational needs. The position requires the ability to follow oral and written instructions, work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, and adapt to flexible scheduling, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The incumbent must also be able to lift and move furniture or equipment as necessary, maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and the public, and consistently demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a commitment to safety and customer service standards.

Additional Considerations

· A work history demonstrating knowledge of, or experience performing duties as housekeeper, custodian, or janitor in an industrial/commercial environment.
· Experience demonstrating the ability to operate and maintain floor care equipment such as vacuums, carpet cleaners, polishers, or other similar floor maintenance equipment/tools.
· Experience demonstrating the ability to read, write, understand and follow instructions.
· Experience demonstrating the ability to lift and move furniture, supplies and equipment.
· Experience demonstrating the ability to following safety and security policies and procedures.
· Experience demonstrating the ability to provide customer service as needed to students, faculty & staff, customers, and other stakeholders.

Special Requirements:
· This position will work all operating hours as needed to cover days, evening, weekends and some holidays.
· Must possess the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, and stand or walk for extended periods of time and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
