Job Duties
The Lead School Safety Officer is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and supervision of School Safety Officers to ensure a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment. This position serves as the primary point of contact for safety personnel, coordinates emergency preparedness and response activities, enforces school safety policies and procedures, and fosters positive relationships among students, staff, and external partners. The Lead School Safety Officer plays a critical role in identifying and mitigating potential safety risks, managing crisis situations, and supporting behavioral interventions to promote a respectful and inclusive school climate.
Minimum Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of school safety policies, procedures, and legal regulations
- Knowledge of emergency preparedness and crisis management strategies
- Knowledge of behavioral intervention practices and de-escalation techniques
- Knowledge of supervisory techniques, performance management, and employee development at the team level
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, students, and multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to carry out written and oral instructions and prepare clear and comprehensive reports
- Ability to monitor student behavior and deter inappropriate behavior in the educational setting
- Ability to effectively plan and organize daily operations of assigned staff
- Ability to lead, motivate, and provide direct guidance to a team of school safety officers
- Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure
- Ability to identify potential threats and respond effectively in real time
- Ability to manage sensitive situations with discretion, empathy, and professionalism
- Ability to maintain a high level of visibility and accessibility within the school community
- Ability to collaborate effectively with rehabilitative care services and other stakeholders
Additional Considerations
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Security experience
- Supervisory or management experience in the area of security
- Experience working with juveniles in school, residential, or secure environments preferred.
- Required: Must possess or be eligible for Virginia DCJS School Security Officer (SSO) Certification within 60 days of hire; maintain recertification every 2 years.
