Job Duties

The Senior Database Administrator monitors, maintains, installs, upgrades, and manages the day-to-day operations of the SQL Database Servers in VRS, and is responsible for the security, integrity, performance, and availability of all agency data. The incumbent develops and implements data administration procedures, standards, and guidelines, updating, altering, and removing data according to VRS policy, ensuring that all backup protocols are followed. The position consults as necessary with project teams, management, and business partners on aspects of data management and database design, and provides DBA support accordingly. The role also provides production support as required.

• Participate in design, development and implementation of complex databases, often using new technologies.
• Provides agency’s current and future requirements related to enterprise Data Architecture, Data Modeling and Data Integrity.
• Install and configure SQL 2022 Contained Always on availability groups.
• Administering databases running on SQL Server clusters, SQL Always On platforms on the latest versions including SQL 2016, 2019 & 2022.
• Experience with Data modeling, SQL scripting and Powershell.
• Experience in DB Provisioning, Migrations, Monitoring and Performance tuning.
• Ensure compliance with industry regulations and best practices related to data security and privacy.
• Ensure that the databases and server are running effectively.
• Perform daily data fixes and refreshes, Manage and complete ad-hoc database requests.
• Refresh the Lower Environment and keep the data clean.
• Implement and manage database backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability.
• Perform data scrambling in accordance with all relevant policies and procedures.
• Specific SQL Maintenance tools/applications are a plus (such as Idera monitoring tools)
• Participate in cross-hierarchal teams and contribute to improving services across agency lines.
• Effectively work with all levels of management and staff to improve processes and procedures.
• Experience in Disaster and Recovery (DR) strategies testing, implementation and documentation.
• Experience working in and administering a medium or large-scale Windows, Linux and Sun Solaris based computing environments.
• Resolves data conflicts for matters such as naming conventions, data privacy, and data ownership.
• Maintains knowledge of trends, developments, and best practices in DBMS and related technology.
• Administer enterprise monitoring of server performance, availability, security and capacity issues.
• Perform periodic exercises to validate backup and recovery procedures.
• Perform maintenance, monitoring and tuning of core databases.
• Provide support in database design and application development.
• Administer and monitor database security.
• Implement and maintain DBA policies, procedures/manuals.
• Provide other technical support as required.
• Participate in On-call rotations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or closely-related field. Must have Eight (8) years in-depth experience using Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 on Windows Server or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Azure certification is preferred.
Excellent database administration skills and a good working experience of MS SQL Server including Clustering, Always on Availability Groups, SSIS & SSRS are required.
Must have knowledge on Rubrik Backups, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft Azure SQL Database, AWS Redis, Mongo DB, etc. Any monitoring tools like Idera, Quest is a plus.

Additional Considerations

Experience with SSIS/SSRS configurations, deployments and troubleshooting & development is required.
Good database skills and the ability to manage the day-to-day operations of the database. Demonstrated project management, troubleshooting, analytical, problem resolution, and customer service skills. Abilities to effectively communicate; prioritize; deal with multiple priorities and activities simultaneously; work in a team environment.

The current hybrid schedule for technology employees is 3 days onsite in Richmond, VA (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and 2 days remote (Monday and Friday). All employees must be able to work the current hybrid schedule and report to the office as needed on designated remote days.
