Job Duties

Serve Virginia’s veterans, their dependents and family members by ensuring they receive the benefits, support, quality care, and recognition they have earned through their service and sacrifice. To advocate for and assist veterans and their dependents in the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of all lawful and ethical veterans claims for benefits to which they are entitled. To educate veterans and dependents on the services and benefits offered by Virginia and the federal government. To conduct outreach to promote VDVS and the programs offered.

Minimum Qualifications

REAL ID is required for employment as part of the federal prerequisites for USDVA Accreditation. Considerable knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to veterans’ benefits. Ability to interpret and apply laws and regulation pertaining to veterans' benefits. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Excellent research, legal analysis, and writing skills. Strong customer service and public speaking skills. Experience with the military and/or military veteran communities. Graduation from an accredited college or university and an ABA accredited law school is required. Licensure before the highest court of any state or federal bar is required. Eligibility for licensure to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims is mandatory. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the education requirement but not for legal licensure. Must reside within the State of Virginia

Additional Considerations

Minimum of 2 years of experience in veterans' law is strongly preferred.
A new probationary period will be required for all new Benefits employees who have not completed and currently maintain USDVA Accreditation, regardless of whether the employee has previously completed a state probationary period.
