Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Forestry is looking for a part-time Forest Inventory Field Assistant. Employee will assist Crew Leader in the re-location and mensuration of inventory plots. The inventory plots are part of a network of plots to assess the condition of the Commonwealth’s forests. Duties involve making accurate measurements of diameter, height, tree condition, as well as azimuths and distances for mapping purposes. Equipment used and provided include: diameter tape, compass, clinometer, logger’s tape, scribe, increment borer, data recorder, and GPS unit. Duties require working under variety of hazardous terrain and weather conditions, including inclement weather, slopes, heavy brush and swamps. Work involves interacting with private landowners and public land managers. Knowledge of portable data recorders and GPS units preferred but not required. Crew Leader (not assistant) is providing a state vehicle. Valid driver’s license required. Some overnight travel required (compensated). The position provides no health or retirement benefits, other than FICA.
This is a Restricted Part-time position.

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a forestry, natural resource conservation, environmental resources or a related program leading to an Associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree program; or equivalent field experience required. Technical experience and in-depth knowledge of the science related to forestry, dendrology, forest mensuration techniques.

Additional Considerations

Selected candidate is required to pass a criminal background check and a drug test.
Must be able to meet minimal physical requirement. May, at times, be called upon to assist with wildfire management
