The Virginia Retirement System is seeking an Accountant I to perform a variety of accounting tasks to ensure all line of business system transactions between General Accounting and Line of Duty Act departments are accurate and properly interfaced into the general ledger in a timely manner. In addition, the position assists with developing and updating policies and procedures, and participates in the agency’s payroll process. This role also assists with the agency’s year-end reporting requirements and the audit process.
This position is entry level and the first step of an approved career ladder illustrated below:

Job Duties
Include but not limited to:
• Analyzes, interprets, and summarizes financial data in accordance with GAAP.
• Oversees accounting, billing, and payments for the Line of Duty Act Fund, ensures that all related accounting transactions are properly interfaced to the general ledger, identifies discrepancies, and takes corrective action as needed as well as prepares the Line of Duty Act reconciliations.
• Prepares monthly wire vouchers for Minnesota Life, UNUM, Reed Group and other third party administators for group life insurance and disability insurance.
• Assists with year-end reporting procedures, work paper preparation, and the audit process.
• Prepares reconciliationsidentifying payroll expense differences, VRS recon items, and expenditure differences.
• Creates and tracks receivables for miscellaneous items such as parking for contractors, and remits the related invoices.
• Performs general administrative tasks.
• Assists with documenting and updating processes and procedures pertaining to General Accounting and the Line of Duty Act.
• Performs other related job duties and special projects as assigned.
• Participates in cross-hierarchal teams and contributes to improving services across agency lines.
• Effectively works with all levels of management and staff to improve processes and procedures.
• Completes additional projects and duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
One (1) year of experience in accounting, including experience in navigating accounting or financial systems, and in preparing account reconciliations or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Additional Considerations
Knowledge of accounting principles and Accounts Payable processes and procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Strong level of attention to detail and accuracy.
Abilities to work independently with minimal supervision; prioritize; meet deadlines; manage multiple assignments simultaneously; resolve complex issues. Requires strong organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and good customer service skills.
Special Instructions
VRS Hybrid Work Schedule: VRS' current hybrid schedule is three (3) days onsite (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and two (2) days remote (Monday and Friday). All employees are expected to work onsite any day of the week if required by management.
