Job Duties

Belle Isle State Park is accepting applications for a Chief Ranger - Maintenance and Operations. In this position, you will join a winning team and assist Park Leadership with the overall management and operation of Belle Isle State Park.

In this position, you will:

  • Perform preventive and custodial maintenance of park buildings and grounds.
  • Supervise staff who perform building and grounds maintenance activities.
  • Review and complete various tasks using maintenance management software, such as timekeeping, creating schedules, assigning work, procurement, and accident reports.
  • Assist with the development of the park budget and annual operating plan.
  • Provide supervision and inspection of cyclical facilities/grounds/equipment maintenance tasks to ensure tasks are completed in compliance with OSHA, VDH, agency standards, or in compliance with other pertinent regulations.
  • Assist with managing and maintaining cultural and natural resources of the park and provide supervision and oversight for volunteer programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with supervising staff or volunteers including training, scheduling work, assigning tasks, and ensuring satisfactory performance and results.
  • Experience with retail cash management, including opening locations for the start of business and accurately settling and securing all assets at the close of business.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform preventive maintenance on buildings and grounds using a variety of tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Experience with project planning and budget management on a practical, operational level.
  • Experience with the use of digital software to keep training, regulatory, or other pertinent records up to date and accessible.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience with parks and recreation or similar environment.
  • Advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair facility or vehicular equipment in multiple technical areas such as community water systems, HVAC, access control, landscaping machinery, etc.
  • Millwright or cabinetry-level skills and abilities in carpentry.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and other regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment to maintain and repair electrical or electronic equipment or devices.
  • Experience with resource management.
  • Experience with routinely performing custodial work at a public facility.

  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
