Job Duties
The Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) is accepting applications for the position of Regional Magistrate Supervisor for the Sixth Magisterial Region within the Department of Magistrate Services. The Regional Magistrate Supervisor ensures appropriate delivery of magistrate services throughout the Region. The Sixth Magisterial Region consists of the 9th, 13th, 14th, and 15th Judicial Districts. See a map for the localities in the Region at http://www.courts.state.va.us/courtadmin/aoc/mag/map/home.html The Regional Magistrate Supervisor manages chief magistrates and magistrates and maintains relationships with judges, clerks of court, and other local government officials to ensure efficient functioning of the magistrate system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· exercising the powers enumerated in Virginia Code § 19.2-45;
· recruiting, managing, training, and evaluating the chief magistrates and magistrates within the region;
· developing, implementing, and applying policies for the chief magistrates and magistrates within the region;
· addressing and resolving conflicts and complaints;
· performing periodic management assessments to ensure appropriate access to the judicial system is provided;
· developing and maintaining good relationships with courts, chief magistrates, and magistrates within the region;
· developing and maintaining good relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
· completing tasks assigned by the Director of Magistrate Services;
· reviewing and responding to correspondence, emails, and telephone inquiries; and
· supporting the Department of Magistrate Services and the Office of the Executive Secretary.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate must be a citizen of the United States, possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education, and either be or become a resident of Virginia prior to appointment. Management or supervisory experience is required. Extensive knowledge of the Virginia judicial system, including criminal law and procedure, is required. Excellent analytical, decision making, and communication skills (written and verbal) are required. The successful candidate must maintain a flexible work schedule and be willing to be on-call at all times.
The most competitive applicants will have a minimum of five years’ experience in the Virginia Magistrate System, demonstrated leadership abilities, demonstrated interpersonal and diplomatic skills, and demonstrated excellence in prior academic or professional endeavors. The most competitive applicants will have a relevant graduate/professional degree or be a member of the Virginia State Bar.
Additional Considerations
If not currently certified as a magistrate, the successful candidate must attend an intensive four-week training course and successfully pass a certification process that includes a written examination and extensive on-the-job training. This is a full-time, FLSA-exempt position requiring the ability to travel throughout the region and state. However, the Regional Magistrate Supervisor’s primary office will be located in Richmond or another locality within Region 6.
