Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

The role of the Human Rights Supervisor is to support the agency’s efforts through constant oversight of monitoring of conditions of confinement in the agency’s correctional center; compliance monitoring; managing the resident discipline and grievance process, and managing a team of Human Rights Coordinators; oversight of monitoring the Ombudsman Line and investigations into allegations, as directed; and monitoring implementation of agency procedures and other initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to rights of juveniles committed to DJJ.
  • Knowledge of DJJ's procedures, service provision within a juvenile correctional center setting, and juvenile correctional center operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with at risk and court involved youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and analyze data and provide comprehensive recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with staff and residents, as well as conduct training.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using automated systems and computer software sufficient to effectively track multiple projects and activities.
  • Ability to design and maintain reporting mechanisms and assess/evaluate current operations and training; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work effectively and appropriately.
  • Demonstrated experience with compliance monitoring and maintaining required compliance documentation; demonstrated experience with compliance audits.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and track work effectively and to organize, assign, and expedite the work of others.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience working in an administrative/business environment with multiple levels of management.
  • Experience with PREA compliance and/or administrative investigations is preferred.
