The Virginia Employment Commission is seeking a Database Administrator to serve as the top-level technical expert for our database systems. In this role, you’ll manage complex SQL Server environments, ensure security and compliance, and optimize performance to keep our mission-critical applications running smoothly.

As a Database Administrator at VEC, you will serve as the technical expert responsible for managing and securing the databases that power our mission-critical systems. You’ll administer logical and physical database environments, primarily SQL Server, ensuring compliance with security policies and agency standards. Your work will include designing and documenting efficient data models and schemas, collaborating with developers to optimize performance, and supporting application development through clean, maintainable code and thorough testing. In addition, you’ll handle sensitive information with strict confidentiality, fulfill responsibilities related to the Federal Tax Information (FTI) Offset Program, and respond to security incidents in accordance with state and federal requirements. Beyond technical duties, you’ll mentor team members, participate in on-call rotations, and contribute to strategic planning initiatives, continuously improving processes to enhance reliability and performance.

At VEC, our mission is clear: lifting up Virginia, one unemployed worker at a time. As a Database Administrator, you’ll play a vital role in safeguarding the data that powers our services. From ensuring compliance and security to enabling seamless application performance, your work will directly impact communities across the Commonwealth.
