Job Duties

The NSU Department of Nursing and Allied Health, centrally located on NSU’s main campus in the state-of-the-art Nursing and General Education Building, invites applicants for two (2) full-time General Education Specialist/Tutors. The General Education Specialist/Tutor will provide services which ensure a fair, equitable and quality working-and learning environments for all employees and members of the university community. The individual in this position serves as an academic liaison for a grant-funded project that provides academic support to freshman and sophomore pre-nursing students. The General Education Specialist/Tutor is responsible for providing academic support to college-level students in core subject areas including math, English, and science. Healthcare experience and knowledge are not requirements for this role. The Specialist will deliver high-quality tutoring services to undergraduate students, supporting their mastery of foundational concepts and development of effective study skills. Key responsibilities include maintaining a structured system for tracking student performance and tutoring sessions, analyzing outcomes using database software, and adapting instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate is an experienced educator with strong content knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to fostering student success in higher education. This position reports to the Grant Project Director, within the Department of Nursing and Allied Health, and collaborates closely with the other grant personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education, or related field
2. Master’s degree in teaching, Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field
3. 2+ years teaching at the secondary education level

Additional Considerations

1. Active, unencumbered Virginia teaching license (or ability to obtain)
2. Prior work experience in an academic setting.
2. 5+ years teaching at the secondary education level
3. Demonstrated tutoring experience in multiple content areas
