Job Duties

As an Operations Training Supervisor, oversees the canine training for Virgnia Department of Corrections' canine unit to include conducting basic and advance canine training for DOC canine officers as mandated by State/Federal law in accordance with standards established by the Department of Criminal Justice Services. Directly responsible for assisting in the reporting, documenting, scheduling, develpoment of and delivery of mandated training for all canine units at facilities and in the field to ensure that Department of Corrections, Department of Justice Services, and American Correctional Associations standards are maintained. Supervise and assist in the Field Training and conduct routine field assessments of Detection K-9 Officers and provide first line supervision to Administrative Staff and Basic Correctional Officer K-9. Leads and counsels staff. Provide support and assistance to the Statewide Canine Coordinator with the performance management duties of the K-9 Corrections Officers ensuring time, attendance and leave balances are accurate and maintained in accordance with policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Working knowledge of Department of Corrections policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to properly communicate, train and handle canines. Acquired and proficient skills in training, leadership, instruction of students and dogs of different skills and levels of learning abilities. Working knowledge of the standard methods of evidence gathering seizure and control. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies/procedures. Proficient and accomplished skills with the computer using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Document as well and demonstrated skills in report writing and grammar. Demonstrated willingness and physical ability to work all posts and shifts. Demonstrated ability to evaluate new and changing methods of detection. Ability to recognize the behavioral traits that are problematic and how to resolve (identifies the interim and terminal performance objectives).

- Valid Operator's License with valid driving privileges in the State of Virginia.
- DCJS General Instructor Certification, K-9 Certification, K-9 Adjunct Instructor.
- Computer proficient - Work document, Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.

Additional Considerations

Stable employment history, military or related criminal justice experience. Prefer individuals at least 21 years old (a waiver may be provided by the Unit Head for individuals 18-20 years old). Bi-lingual and Multi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
