Job Duties
The mission of the Internal Audit Unit is to provide independent, risk-based, and objective assurance as well as advisory (consulting) services designed to add value and improve the Department of Corrections' operations. The Unit helps the Organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and control processes.
To perform professional internal audits by assisting with planning and conducting audits of the DOCs’ environment. The primary work products are comprehensive audit working papers and final audit reports. Audits performed include operational, compliance, financial, and other audits to evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of operations and related internal controls within the DOC. Duties may include completing elements of audits or special projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience in accounting, auditing/assurance services, information systems, or risk management. Knowledge of the audit process, audit standards and practices, and IT concepts and principles. Knowledge of federal, state, and DOC laws, rules, regulations, and compliance issues. Excellent oral and written skills. Skill in using advanced personal computer applications such as spreadsheets, database packages, office automation software, the Internet, and other software required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Ability to perform comprehensive, and at times complex, financial, compliance, and operational audits. Ability to utilize DOC information systems to design and perform audit work. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with all levels of management, to include Executive Management, Wardens, Superintendents, Chiefs, and individuals of other Commonwealth and Federal entities. Strong commitment to ethics; self-motivated with a desire to learn and deploy new audit techniques; exhibits professional judgment. Stays current on industry practices; proactive in evaluating and solving problems; successfully organizes assigned audit and project work to meet objectives and deadlines; establishes an effective working relationship with the auditee and enlists their cooperation. Actively maintains continued growth and improvement regarding the requirements of the position; continuous emphasis on improving service and value. Excellent communicator capable of communicating audit needs clearly; anticipates the needs of others; develops effective means to convey oral and written thoughts; effectively manages conflict; uses tact when dealing with uncooperative and sensitive individuals.
Additional Considerations
Possession of, or progression towards relevant, professional certification (ex. CIA, CISA, CPA).
