Job Duties

The summer job program at the Department of Health Professions (DHP) provides an onsite opportunity to spend a summer working side-by-side with knowledgeable staff in an environment devoted to protecting the public. DHP consists of 13 health regulatory boards covering 62 professions, 3 programs (Prescription Monitoring Program, Health Practitioners Monitoring Program and the Healthcare Workforce data Center) along with all centralized services to support the department. Our mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice and providing information to health care practitioners and the public. Our headquarters is in Henrico, Virginia.

Eligibility: The DHP Summer Internship Program is primarily for undergraduate students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with a minimum 3.0 GPA who are at least eighteen years of age at the time they begin the program. To be eligible, candidates must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents. A transcript, application, and cover letter will be required for all candidates.

Compensation: This is a paid summer wage position, with participants working approximately 30 hours a week for a ten-week period with a tentative start date of May 18, 2026 or June 1, 2026 earning $18.00 per hour.

Selection: The DHP Summer Internship Program is highly competitive. Applications will be reviewed thoroughly and selections will be based on the quality of the complete application packet. Prospective candidates may be interviewed either in-person, over the phone, or virtually. Candidates may be required to undergo a writing or work sample. Selected candidates will be informed of their selection in April. Selected candidates will be required to complete an I-9 form and provide documentation of identity for employment purposes as well as attend orientation and complete all onboarding documents and tasks as any other wage position would, including a criminal background check and references

Minimum Qualifications

• Has literature review and statistical analysis work experience that will be useful to similar work done by the healthcare workforce data center
• Has taken classes in public health, statistics or epidemiology, biostatistics and conducted scientific research.
• Has presented to diverse audience
• Demonstrated ability to conduct data analysis and cleaning
• Demonstrated ability to use statistical and data visualization software such as SPSS, SAS, R, Tableau, etc.
