Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Education is looking for a School Nutrition Training and Initiatives Coordinator support the effective administration of Virginia’s federal child nutrition programs by developing and delivering professional training, coordinating special initiatives, and providing technical assistance to school and community nutrition program sponsors.

This person would be expected to provide leadership, technical expertise, and assistance to all child nutrition programs administered by the Virginia Department of Education Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs (VDOE-SCNP) and develop effective programs and to ensure all children have access to nutritious meals while maintaining program integrity and financial accountability.

The School Nutrition Training and Initiatives Coordinator would be responsible for the following duties:

  • Assess training needs and develop responsive professional development resources for local program operators and state internal staff.
  • Design, deliver, and evaluate training through webinars, in-person events, e-Learning modules, conferences, and other formats.
  • Maintain and update training materials, presentations, standardized recipes, and technical assistance tools.
  • Develop and publish user-friendly resources, guides, and communications to support program implementation.
  • Lead the development and tracking of the Training and Special Initiative Unit’s special projects and strategic plan efforts.
  • Assist in planning and preparing grant proposals, monitoring grant-related activities, and completing required reports.
  • Collaborate with internal staff, Program operators, and external partners to support training and special initiative project successes.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff performance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles, training methods, and instructional design.
  • Understanding of federal child nutrition programs and basic foodservice operations.
  • Strong communication, project coordination, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with software applications used to create and deliver learning.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, work independently, and collaborate with partners.
  • Evidence of progressive professional experience with exposure to supervisory, lead, or project coordination responsibilities.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience administering the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, or the Child and Adult Care Food Program at the local, state, or federal level, preferred.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications including Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or InDesign, preferred.
  • Experience with Articulate360 software applications or other eLearning authoring tools preferred.
