Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Weights and Measures, Consumer Protection Division, is seeking an individual to serve as Weights and Measures Inspector – Large Capacity/CDL. The assigned territory includes the counties of Albermarle, Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charles City, Charlottsville City, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Emporia City, Fluvanna, Goochland, Greensville, Hanover, Henrico, Hopewell City, King & Queen, King William, Lancaster, Louisa, Lunenburg, New Kent, Nottoway, Petersburg City, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George and Richmond City. Duties include enforcing the Virginia Weights and Measures Laws and related regulations; testing, inspecting, and determining the accuracy of weighing devices used commercially in Virginia to include vehicle scales, livestock scales, farm scales, hopper scales, warehouse scales, and forklift scales. Duties also involve investigating related consumer complaints, point of sale inspections, completing documentation of activities, and preparing investigative summaries as needed. Position requires occasional overnight travel. The selected applicant must reside in or be willing to relocate within a reasonable distance of the assigned territory and be able to meet the physical demands of the position. Pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing required.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic knowledge of inspection, investigation and enforcement procedures related to petroleum, supermarket, or scales industries (either sales or service). Must be able to report facts accurately and to understand, interpret and apply laws and regulations. Must have excellent customer service skills and exceptional communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to operate assigned equipment proficiently and safely and have basic mechanical aptitude and mathematical skills. Effective organizational and planning skills and the ability to work independently. Proficiency with standard office software applications required. This position is physically demanding, the selected individual must have the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. on a regular basis; bend as needed; distinguish colors; exhibit manual dexterity; and be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions. The selected applicant must have a current CDL of at least Class B or must be able to obtain a valid CDL Class B within 4 months of hire. If the selected candidate does not currently have a CDL, VDACS will cover the expenses incurred after employment with the agency begins to obtain a Class B CDL (nothing higher). A one-year tenure agreement will be required for covered expenses. High School Diploma/GED required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of business, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field. Experience in enforcement, inspection, or investigative activities in a regulatory environment such as weights and measures is highly desirable.
