Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Education is looking for a School Nutrition Training and Initiatives Specialist to serve as a recognized training and instructional design expert for child nutrition programs in the Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs (SCNP) at the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
This position will primarily work to ensure child nutrition program operators receive consistent, high-quality, accessible, and practical training and professional development that strengthens program implementation statewide to ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations.
The School Nutrition Training and Initiatives Specialist would be responsible for the following duties:
- Translate program priorities, policies, guidance, and operational needs into clear, practical, and engaging training materials for school and community nutrition program operators.
- Design, develop, and update training content and materials based on identified needs, program priorities, policy changes, and continuous improvement goals.
- Coordinate, facilitate, and deliver professional development for school and community nutrition program sponsors (e.g., conferences, webinars, workshops, meetings, and hybrid formats).
Support development and implementation of strategic and annual training plans aligned with SCNP priorities and initiatives. - Coordinate logistics for training events, including scheduling, registration support, platform setup, materials preparation, and post-event follow-up.
- Maintain assigned sections of the training calendar and ensure trainings are accurately documented and communicated.
- Develop and adapt basic graphics and visual elements for presentations, training materials, and other applications, ensuring consistency with VDOE branding, plain language, and accessibility standards.
- Develop, upload, manage, and update training content in online learning platforms and content management systems.
- Develop and administer surveys and feedback tools to evaluate training participation, satisfaction, and effectiveness.
- Collect, organize, and review quantitative and qualitative training data to identify trends, gaps, and improvement opportunities.
- Work collaboratively with SCNP team members and partners to ensure training content is accurate, consistent, and aligned with program goals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Working knowledge of adult learning theory, instructional design principles, and training delivery models used to engage adult learners and support applied, practice-based learning.
- Knowledge of visual communication principles, including styling, branding, plain-language, and accessibility standards (including Section 508) for training materials and digital content.
- Knowledge of basic research, evaluation, and data literacy concepts related to training and professional development, including survey design, feedback collection, and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data.
- Basic knowledge of school and community nutrition programs, applicable federal and state laws and regulations, and general nutrition and food service operations.
- Demonstrated skill in delivering professional development through effective public speaking, facilitation, and audience engagement in virtual, in-person, and hybrid settings.
- Demonstrated skill in researching program topics, policies, and best practices and translating complex information into practical, user-friendly training content.
- Use common digital tools and platforms to support content development, communication, and training delivery.
Additional Considerations
- Advanced knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Programs is preferred.
