Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Correction’s (VADOC) Agribusiness Unit is charged with providing agricultural training opportunities to inmates to enhance re-entry and reduce recidivism, while reducing food cost for the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC).
Perform daily duties of a large farm operation which includes the production of row crops, hay, vegetable crops, maintenance of buildings, grounds, roadways and the operation and maintenance of all farm equipment utilizing inmate workforce. Provide training, supervision and evaluation to the inmate workforce while performing all farm tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Comprehensive knowledge of crop production, including row crops, vegetables, and hay, from the initial planning stages through to market distribution. Have a functional understanding of timber and lumber production, land management, and the construction of farm buildings. Operational and maintenance proficiency required for various farm equipment, paired with a demonstrated ability to supervise a workforce, which in this specific context involves directing and training inmates. Candidates must be able to follow complex written and oral instructions, maintain precise records, and solve practical problems. High school diploma or equivalent, and a valid driver’s license. Additionally, you are required to obtain and maintain a Registered Technician License for pesticide application through the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) within 12 months of being hired.
Additional Considerations
Agricultural, construction or equipment experience. Possession of Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one.
