Job Duties

The Housekeeping Inspector ensures a clean, safe, and healthy environment for tenants occupying facilities owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia. This position performs routine walk‑through inspections of assigned buildings, parking decks, and surface lots to verify that contract custodial services meet all required specifications. The role works closely with contract vendor supervisors to address deficiencies, apply proper cleaning standards, and promote consistent service quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily walk‑through inspections of assigned buildings, including tenant areas, common spaces, restrooms, and support areas, to evaluate the quality and completeness of custodial work.
  • Inspect parking decks and surface lots to ensure contract vendors meet cleanliness, safety, and presentation standards in all assigned exterior locations.
  • Document inspection findings, including cleanliness levels, deficiencies, safety concerns, and compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Communicate with contract vendor supervisors to review inspection results, resolve issues, and ensure corrective actions are completed promptly.
  • Monitor the proper use of cleaning techniques, products, and procedures in alignment with industry standards and agency expectations.
  • Report maintenance needs or safety hazards observed during inspections to appropriate teams for follow‑up.
  • Support quality assurance efforts by maintaining accurate records, logs, and reports related to custodial performance.
  • Assist in reinforcing service expectations and ensuring vendor compliance with custodial specifications and contractual obligations.
  • Promote a positive tenant experience by responding professionally to cleanliness concerns and ensuring issues are resolved quickly and effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to work an assigned schedule of 3:45 p.m. – 11:45 p.m.; some weekend and holiday work required
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License.
  • Knowledge and training in cleaning techniques, methods, materials, and equipment for a wide variety of surfaces and environments.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures regarding the use of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
  • Ability to evaluate the work performance of contract custodial personnel.
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict‑management skills, with the ability to communicate clearly in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with vendors, tenants, and internal staff.
  • Ability to perform manual labor; stand and walk for extended periods; routinely lift, push, or pull 20 pounds; and occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Strong time‑management and organizational skills.
  • High attention to detail in identifying cleanliness issues, deficiencies, and safety concerns.
  • Ability to interpret custodial contract requirements and apply quality‑assurance standards.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience managing or inspecting contract custodial services, is preferred.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety practices and building maintenance environments, is preferred.
  • Prior experience in a government or large multi‑facility setting, is preferred.
  • Experience operating power cleaning equipment such as floor buffers and vacuums, is preferred.
  • Experience with floor care, including stripping, waxing, and/or shampooing floors, is preferred.
