The Epidemiologic Response Surveillance Manager provides statewide leadership
for Virginia’s syndromic and outbreak surveillance programs and oversees key
public health data systems, including ESSENCE, VOSS, and REDCap. This role
ensures the Commonwealth’s ability to monitor population health, detect
emerging threats, and support rapid epidemiologic responses. The manager

this position requires 24/7 availability during public health emergencies.

The epidemiology program manager is responsible for managing a department and/or multiple statewide program units within an epidemiology division. At this level, positions in this role serve as a technical expert performing work of unusual difficulty requiring the independent management and technical supervision of statewide epidemiology programs to include planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating statewide epidemiology programs, researching and developing statewide policy and plans, as well as, coordinating local, district, and regional program performance. Positions in this role typically manage a departmental or program budget. Positions in this role routinely serve as a liaison and mentor for other work units, student internships, practicums, and/or other activities that strengthen the connection for public health workforce development. Positions in this role work under the limited supervision of a division department head while receiving guidance in the form of general goals to be accomplished and broad program policy.
