Job Duties
The Division of Capitol Square Services (DCSS) within the Department of General Services (DGS) is seeking a skilled and motivated Custodial Supervisor to join the Bureau of Facilities & Maintenance (BFM). BFM is a customer‑focused organization dedicated to delivering high‑quality, cost‑effective, and timely services to approximately 75 state and legislative agencies located throughout the Capitol Square complex. The bureau operates and maintains more than 6.45 million square feet of space across the Capitol Complex and the greater Richmond metropolitan area, including office buildings, the State Capitol, the Governor’s Mansion, and historic monuments.
We are looking for a Custodial Supervisor committed to maintaining a clean, safe, efficient, and welcoming environment in and around the facilities under our care. Reporting to the Housekeeping Manager, this position provides direct supervision to housekeeping staff, oversees set‑up and breakdown for special events, and coordinates furniture movement within DGS‑managed buildings.
This is a full-time evening‑shift position, with work hours from 3:30 PM to 11:30 PM, including some holidays and weekends.
Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
- Supervising housekeeping staff to ensure all assigned areas within the Capitol Square complex are properly cleaned, maintained, and fully staffed.
- Monitoring daily operations, responding promptly to housekeeping requests, and ensuring timely communication of messages and work assignments.
- Supporting special events by coordinating set‑up, breakdown, and ensuring required equipment is in place and properly maintained.
- Inspecting assigned areas, restrooms, housekeeping closets, and equipment to ensure compliance with cleanliness, safety, and operational standards.
- Training new housekeeping staff in cleaning techniques, equipment use, safety procedures, and departmental expectations.
- Addressing and documenting performance issues as they occur and consulting with Human Resources when needed.
- Ensuring weekly timesheets are accurate, complete, and submitted by established deadlines.
- Maintaining inventory of housekeeping supplies and equipment, and reporting repair needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid Virginia Driver's License
- Ability to work required shift of 3:30 PM - 11:30 PM, Monday through Friday with some weekends and holidays.
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques, methods, materials, equipment, and chemicals used for a wide variety of surfaces and facility types.
- Knowledge of safety practices related to the handling and use of cleaning chemicals and supplies, including applicable OSHA standards.
- Skill in operating power cleaning equipment, such as floor buffers, scrubbers, and commercial vacuums.
- Basic computer proficiency, including the use of email and Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
Additional Considerations
- Experience stripping & waxing floors as well as shampooing carpets, is preferred.
- Experience inspecting custodial work areas, restrooms, and supply closets to ensure compliance with cleanliness and safety standards, is preferred.
