Job Duties
The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center is currently seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of IT and Operations Specialist. The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center provides access to higher education, workforce training and programming, innovative industry services, and technologically advanced state-of-the-art facilities and learning labs that includes comprehensive fiscal management, operational and supportive services, community outreach and engagement, and extensive collaborations. These components work together to support the organization’s mission of advancing Southern Virginia’s economic potential through education, innovation, and collaboration. The purpose of this position is to provide advanced technical and infrastructure support to ensure the reliability, security, and performance of SVHEC’s technology environment. Supporting and maintaining enterprise‑level systems including network infrastructure, servers, cloud platforms, building security systems, and instructional technologies. This role performs complex troubleshooting, supports infrastructure improvements, and serves as a technical resource for staff, students, academic partners, and leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
Advanced working knowledge of network infrastructure, including LAN/WAN, wireless systems, VLANs, and network security principles. Strong knowledge of Windows operating systems, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, cloud services, and identity management. Knowledgeable of server administration, patch management, backups, processess, and system monitoring best practices. Knowledge of IT security systems and access control technologies. Proficient in structured cabling, physical network infrastructure installation, and cable management. Strong ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and perform root cause analysis. Ability to manage multiple priorities, document technical processes, and communicate effectively with technical and non‑technical users. Demonstrated customer service, judgment, planning, teamwork, and problem‑solving. High School Graduate or equivalent.
Additional Considerations
Coursework in Information Technology. Industry certifications (e.g., CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft, Google, Aruba, Palo Alto, or comparable).
