The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation invites applications for a full-time, non–tenure-track Core Faculty position. We seek an educator committed to excellence in teaching, collaborative engagement, and advancing student learning in a dynamic academic environment. The successful candidate will teach core undergraduate courses in Health and Physical Education and related fields. Appointments are renewable in addition to teaching, the faculty member will be a core contributor to program assessments and accreditation activities, including those aligned with SACSCOC and CAEP. This role requires active participation in research or scholarly activities, academic advising, and service to the department, college, university, and broader community.

Core faculty responsibilities include:

Teach core undergraduate courses in Health and Physical Education and related content areas, with an emphasis on teaching and other professional responsibilities.

Contribute to program assessments and accreditation processes, including SACSCOC and CAEP.

Engage in research and scholarly activities that demonstrate a record—or strong potential—of productivity.

Advise and mentor undergraduate students.

Participate in departmental, college, and university service.

Maintain meaningful engagement with schools, community partners, and professional organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Kinesiology, Exercise Science or a closely related field (ABD considered if degree will be completed by the start date).

Previous experience and/or evidence of success in developing and/or teaching Kinesiology, Exercise Science or Health, Physical Education curriculum materials.

Experience building collaborative partnerships and relationships with stakeholders in the community, in the non-profit or business community, or teacher education programs in colleges/universities.

Experience in face-to-face teaching and learning.

Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices.

*Virginia State University requires that faculty be appropriately credentialed to teach assigned courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. VSU demonstrates compliance with its Faculty Credentialing Policy #2301 for all applicable education, experience, licensure and certification requirements in the selection and hiring of its faculty.

Additional Considerations

Experience as core faculty in a Kinesiology or Exercise Physiology program

Experience, accreditation in athletic training or other relevant Allied Health discipline

Established record of research and scholarly publications

Experience with data management for program evaluation (e.g., KPIs, student learning outcomes)

Experience with online, hybrid, and/or technology-enhanced instruction

Record of external grant activity or potential for securing funding
