Job Duties

The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center is currently seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of HVAC Instructor within its Workforce Training Division. The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center provides access to higher education, workforce training, and innovative industry services through technologically advanced facilities and learning labs. The organization delivers comprehensive fiscal, operational, and support services while engaging the community through outreach and broad collaborations. Together, these components strengthen the Center’s mission to advance Southern Virginia’s economic potential through education, innovation, and partnership. The full-time HVAC Instructor will focus on preparing trainees with skills, knowledge and abilities as well as readiness to obtain industry-recognized certification(s) as a direct pathway to employment in the HVAC sector and/or to pursue further post-secondary training in the field. This position will provide hands-on, project-based learning instruction in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. In addition to instructional duties, the instructor will assist with inventory management, ensure equipment is properly maintained and operational, and engage with employer partners to better understand and meet workforce needs. High school dual enrollment learners will engage in face-to-face instruction as well as applied learning labs (relevant hands-on learning experiences) leading to industry-recognized credential(s). This position reports to the Director of Workforce Training Programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning courses/components including refrigeration theory, characteristics of burners, system components, electrical controls and motors, installation, and troubleshooting including both classroom and laboratory instruction; Extensive residential or industrial work experience in HVAC or related fields; Extensive knowledge of OSHA Safety standards and industry requirements; Ability to apply HVAC-related knowledge to design hands-on labs based on real-world scenarios for training purposes; Demonstrated ability to engage with and develop positive working relationships with employers, learners, and other stakeholders; Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with diverse audiences; Intermediate to advanced digital literacy including proficiency using word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet applications. Must be effective operating well in a fast-paced environment and readily adaptable to changes as needed. Must be able to work independently, exercise sound judgment; Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills; Excellent time management skills including proven ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. High school graduate or equivalent.

Additional Considerations

Extensive work experience with residential or commercial HVAC systems including installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting; Certifications in National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 certification. Current facilitator, training, or state Career and Technical Education (CTE) teaching credential.
