Job Duties
The Laboratory Manager provides high quality undergraduate and graduate education for computer science and engineering students. The Laboratory Manager also provides quality support for the Department of Engineering and Computer Science.
Job Duties:
- Apply theory and principles of mechanical engineering to modify, develop, test, or calibrate machinery and equipment under direction of engineering staff or physical scientists. Manage the laboratories and maintain equipment. Maintain inventory of all equipment and supplies for the various laboratories associated with the computer and manufacturing engineering programs and update the Department Chair as designated.
- Distribute laboratory supplies during the semester for various laboratories associated with the department and provide technical assistance and support to faculty. Keep the laboratories well organized. Keep the laboratory in a condition that supports University and ABET safety guidelines and ensures design elements meet federal, state and agency requirements for strength, geometric and economy.
- Maintain software tools relevant to computer and manufacturing engineering programs’ needs. Assesses test procedures, materials failures and/or materials specifications. Provide training on modern tools to faculty and students. Participate in training workshops to maintain effectiveness.
- Serve on Laboratory Committee. Work collaboratively with other technical support staff within the College and University as needed to accomplish tasks. Supervise students and other support staff as directed. Work closely with faculty in identifying course and senior design project related supplies. Order laboratory equipment and supplies through the eVA system.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of machining processes using manual and numerical control machines.
- Demonstrated ability operating laboratory equipment and performing repairs on computer aided equipment including 3D printers and CNC machines.
- An Ability to manage people and processes.
- An ability to maintain inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Ability to use the Commonwealth’s procurement system, eVA.
Additional Considerations
- Having worked in a higher education setting (two- or four-year institution) or industry is preferred.
- A working knowledge of enterprise resource planning software is preferred.
