Job Duties
The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) is seeking a detail‑driven, highly organized Commission Appeals Legal Assistant to support the full lifecycle of unemployment insurance appeal cases. In this critical role, you will ensure appeals are processed efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with state and federal requirements. You’ll manage case intake, maintain records, support Special Examiners, prepare legal documents, produce certified transcripts, and serve as a resource for inquiries from claimants, employers, representatives, and court personnel. Your work forms part of the official administrative record for Commission decisions and circuit court appeals.

Note: This recruitment will fill multiple positions located in our Henrico central office. Candidates invited to interview will be required to complete a skills-based assessment.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to accurately type 70–90 words per minute and transcribe administrative hearings with a high degree of precision and consistency.
• Strong listening, documentation, and transcription abilities, including the capacity to process complex testimony and maintain accuracy under time constraints.
• Basic knowledge of general office procedures, practices, and equipment; standard English grammar and punctuation; and legal processes and terminology.
• Knowledge of legal terminology, administrative hearing procedures, confidentiality requirements, and document‑handling protocols.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and time‑management skills with attention to detail.
• Skill in proofreading, editing, data entry, scheduling, and using relevant systems such as VUIS, Clear2There, eFax, and bot tools.
• Ability to maintain accurate records, meet deadlines, follow established guidelines, adapt to new systems, work independently and as part of a team, and uphold confidentiality and professionalism.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office Professional and/or comparable software.
• Familiarity with electronic document management, record retention practices, and workflow tracking tools.
Additional Considerations
• Experience in unemployment insurance programs and/or appeals processes.
• Paralegal education, certification, or experience providing administrative or legal support in a fast‑paced legal or hearing office environment.
• Experience accurately transcribing administrative hearings in a fast-paced environment.
