Do you enjoy working with the public? The Western Tidewater Health District is seeking a highly qualified Environmental Health Specialist II to join our Environmental Health Team. The Western Tidewater Health District services the City of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, and the City of Franklin. This position will be assigned primarily to the onsite sewage and private well program, with additional duties in rabies prevention, campgrounds and marinas. The person selected for the position must currently hold a Master Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator or Master Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator license from the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation.
A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.
Duties include:
• Inspection, enforcement, investigation, and implementation of regulations in all areas of environmental health but specifically to the onsite sewage and private well program.
• Provide oversight and direct service to migrant labor camps, campgrounds, hotels, daycares, marinas, their owners, and their patrons.
• This position will perform rabies investigations.
• This position will also respond to general environmental complaints and emergency response situations.
Enforcement activities are carried out under close supervision, pending completion of required knowledge, skill and abilities training and certification. Work assignments may be narrow or broad and may require travel to other district offices and occasional weekend duties.
The Western Tidewater Health District is part of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), which is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts.

Minimum Qualifications
• Basic knowledge of biology, epidemiology, chemistry, mathematics, and statistics
• Ability to interpret complex federal, state and local environmental health policies,
regulations, and laws
• Skill in communication, both oral and written; ability to deal with the public and
resolve conflict in a regulatory setting
• Experience preparing thorough documentation and reports of regulatory activities
• Skill as an educator/trainer of environmental health principles
• Ability to interpret and enforce laws and regulations governing environmental health
programs
• Ability to analyze information and make recommendations; to receive, understand and
perform tasks as instructed by supervisor; to perform physically demanding tasks
Additional Considerations
Bachelor's degree in environmental health sciences or equivalent
