Job Duties
The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center is currently seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Maintenance Technician and Custodial Lead. The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center provides access to higher education, workforce training and programming, innovative industry services, and technologically advanced state-of-the-art facilities and learning labs that includes comprehensive fiscal management, operational and supportive services, community outreach and engagement, and extensive collaborations. These components work together to support the organization’s mission of advancing Southern Virginia’s economic potential through education, innovation, and collaboration. This position reports directly to the Operations Manager and provides hands-on facility maintenance, campus operations support, custodial services, and lead coordination of custodial work across SVHEC facilities. The position is responsible for maintaining safe, clean, operational, and presentation-ready buildings and grounds, including classrooms, labs, offices, public areas, restrooms, event spaces, exterior access areas, and specialized training areas. The position also performs routine and preventive building maintenance; troubleshoots facility issues; coordinates with vendors and contractors when specialized repairs are required; monitors inventory and maintenance supplies; supports room setups, moves, and special events; and provides campus-wide functional oversight of custodial work by assigning priorities, checking completion and quality, training workers in cleaning methods and equipment use, and communicating progress, supply needs, and repair concerns to the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable custodial experience in a commercial or educational setting. Knowledge of cleaning methods and use of cleaning chemicals, equipment and supplies; and of safety practices. Working knowledge of preventive facility maintenance and the ability to perform general building maintenance. Working knowledge and skill in the operation of manual and power cleaning equipment. Knowledge of SDS, Bloodborne Pathogens and OSHA regulations. Demonstrated ability to lift and move heavy objects, stand and walk for extended periods, bend, reach, push, pull, safely work from ladders when required, move furniture and equipment. Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, work progress, inventory levels, supply needs, facility-related concerns, and completed assignments. Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to use a computer and use Microsoft Word, Email, Internet and telephone skills etc. High school graduate or equivalent.
Additional Considerations
Experience serving in a lead worker, shift lead, crew lead, or functional coordination role involving task assignment or training others.
