Who we are:
Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute (SVMHI) is a 72-bed Joint Commission accredited state psychiatric facility located in Danville, VA. The hospital serves individuals who are civilly committed and in need of treatment, and/or individuals involved in the criminal justice system who need treatment and/or pre-trial evaluation.

What we are looking for:
The Rehab Department at SVMHI is seeking a professional and friendly wage (part-time) Rehab Assistant to join our team! Responsibilities include:

The duties of this position include: provide safe transport and accountability of clients while on community outing trips as needed, facilitating and co-facilitating active treatment with adults with serious mental illness via group and individualized engagement sessions as needed, plan and facilitate day, evening and weekend activities, and special events, with a particular focus on leading evening leisure programming, document on group attendance and progress according to hospital and departmental policy, provide assistance in aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Rehab Services Department, and to provide quality services in line with hospital and departmental missions, policies, and procedures.

This position will work the following hours: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday from 10:30 am-7:30 pm and Thursday from 1:00-5:00 pm totaling 28 hours weekly unless otherwise assigned by the supervisor to cover business needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have a valid driver's license that remains valid and in good standing throughout employment.
Ability to read maps and/or use GPS for directions.

This position also requires:
Vision and hearing adequate to recognize and respond to hazardous situations to ensure safety.
Ability to observe and describe observations orally, in writing, and electronically.
Ability to be courteous to individuals and respectful of the dignity of others at all times.
Ability to work effectively with staff with a team approach.
Appropriately intervene in crisis or problem situations.
Perform repetitious walking and/or standing, bending, lifting and reaching overhead to position, restrain/transfer/transport and/or escort clients, and provide assistance with activities of daily living.
Successful completion of Therapeutic Options Training, CPR and Basic Life Support.
Ability to perform infection prevention/control practices and appropriately apply standards in daily activities.
Knowledge and skills related to psychosocial rehabilitation/recovery models of intervention.
Knowledge of mental health disorders, substance abuse disorders and models of intervention/active treatment.
Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and be available to work irregular hours as assigned up to 28 hours per week.

Additional Considerations

Work/internship experience working in an inpatient psychosocial rehabilitative, psychiatric, healthcare facility, acute care, long-term or correctional setting.
