Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Taxation is seeking a motivated public policy professional to join the Office of Legal Affairs. In this pivotal role, you will support the Agency’s Disclosure Officer in developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and safeguards that protect the integrity and confidentiality of Virginia’s taxpayer information.
As the Assistant Disclosure Officer, you will help ensure that Virginia Tax, its employees, contractors, and partner government agencies uphold all state and federal requirements governing the handling, release, and protection of confidential tax records. Your work will directly contribute to maintaining public trust and safeguarding sensitive taxpayer data.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist in administering and enhancing the Agency’s disclosure and safeguard programs.
• Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines related to the protection and release of taxpayer information.
• Support oversight of internal controls, security procedures, and reporting obligations tied to maintaining confidential tax data.
• Partner with staff members across the department, as well as with external agencies, to promote consistent, compliant practices for accessing and handling protected information
• Contribute to required notifications, documentation, and reporting under applicable legal and regulatory frameworks.
This role is essential to the Disclosure Office’s mission to protect federal and state taxpayer information and promote a culture of compliance and information security across the agency.
This position is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule once fully trained. Hybrid schedule is typically in office work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and telework on Monday and Friday.
The anticipated hiring salary is commensurate with experience, up to $100,000.

Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, and requirements regarding the safeguarding and disclosure of state and federal tax information or other sensitive or confidential information
Knowledge of and/or experience with investigative and analytical techniques
Proficiency with PC, Microsoft Office Applications, as well as an understanding of how to navigate databases with sensitive information while being mindful of cybersecurity considerations
Experience with policy, regulations, and legal research
Proven record of working with all levels of management to resolve issues and reach an appropriate solution
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to track records, manage documentation, and maintain accurate logs or databases
Experience preparing reports, conducting research, or drafting professional correspondence
Strong attention to detail and accuracy while following detailed procedures, and when handling secure documents or completing compliance‑related tasks
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Additional Considerations
Experience interpreting and applying federal or state laws, regulations, or compliance requirements
Advanced experience, skill or knowledge in areas such as law, public policy, public administration, taxation, or other relevant fields
