Job Duties:

Mission Statement: The mission of the Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI) is to provide services and resources to Virginians who are blind, vision impaired, or deafblind to confidently reach their goals for work, school, and life.
We are seeking a Wellness Instructor to organize, plan, and deliver individualized Wellness Instruction to blind, vision impaired, and deafblind students. This instruction is designed to help students achieve their optimum level of independence and wellness at home, in their communities, and at work.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Evaluates student needs and makes training recommendations.
- Schedules, plans, and delivers Wellness Instruction.
- Schedules, plans, and delivers structured opportunities for recreation in a holistic program that.
- Communicates effectively in oral and written format regarding services provided, accomplishments achieved, challenges encountered, recommendations, and attendance.
Other duties/special projects as assigned. Completes duties and/or projects as needed or directed by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Basic water safety certification AND CPR certification or Lifeguard certification with water instructor’s certification, or the ability to obtain the same within 2 months of employment.
Training and Experience
- Training and/or experience as a wellness instructor or coach.
- Training on disease- and lifestyle‑related topics such as smoking cessation, weight management, nutrition, stress reduction, and chronic conditions.
- Certification from an accredited professional fitness instruction program.
Working Knowledge of
- Health and wellness programs, including principles and methods for curriculum and training design, assessment procedures, instructional methods for individuals and groups, and measuring training effectiveness.
- Principles and processes for providing customer and personal service, including needs assessment, meeting service quality standards, and evaluating customer satisfaction.
- Blindness, vision impairments, and other disabilities, as well as adaptive skills and equipment used for independent functioning.
Skills in
- Using computers effectively, including MS Office applications such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Being outgoing and personable, working independently, and demonstrating strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Demonstrated Ability to
- Serve as a resource, advisor, coordinator, and educator in delivering wellness‑related programs and activities.
- Assess and develop wellness education programs to meet consumer needs.
- Instruct, coach, motivate, support, and empower students and consumers.
Ability to:
- Partner with individuals, organizations, and community members to plan and coordinate activities that promote health and wellness.
- Work effectively with a wide variety of people, establish rapport and trust with students, and participate collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
Additional Considerations:
- Training or experience in health promotion, health education, athletic training, nutrition, or other health related field, or some experience as a wellness instructor or coach.
- Experience teaching individuals who are blind, vision impaired, or deafblind.
- Demonstrated ability to gather data about a student's career interests and the physical abilities the student would use on the job.
