Job Duties

Make an Impact Through Meaningful Public Service

The Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission’s Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund (Virginia Victims’ Fund) provides critical financial assistance and support to victims of crime throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our work helps individuals and families navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives with compassion, professionalism, and fairness.

We are seeking motivated and detail-oriented professionals to join our team as Claims Examiners. This role combines analytical problem-solving, case management, customer service, and legal interpretation in a fast-paced environment where every case presents unique challenges.

This is not a repetitive “checklist” position. Claims are dynamic, often involving complex documentation, multiple stakeholders, evolving circumstances, and interpretation of Virginia Code and program policies. The ideal candidate enjoys investigative work, critical thinking, and putting together the pieces of a complex puzzle while maintaining empathy and professionalism.

What You’ll Do

Claims Examiners review and evaluate criminal injury compensation claims to determine eligibility and award decisions in accordance with Virginia law and agency policies. This role involves analyzing records and documentation, managing a dynamic caseload, communicating with victims and stakeholders, conducting follow-up research, preparing detailed reports and correspondence, and collaborating with internal and external partners to support victims throughout the claims process.

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role

Successful Claims Examiners are analytical, adaptable, and detail-oriented professionals who enjoy problem-solving and investigative work. They can manage changing priorities in a fast-paced environment while balancing empathy with objective decision-making. Strong candidates communicate professionally in sensitive situations, work effectively both independently and as part of a team, and are comfortable interpreting laws, policies, and complex information to make sound decisions.
