Job Duties

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) is seeking an experienced individual to serve as an MRC Case Clinical Nurse Reviewer (CNR). This position focuses on interpreting, analyzing, organizing, compiling, transcribing, and composing succinct mortality case summaries within the mandated deadlines and specified timeframes. This position is responsible for reviewing and developing case summaries from documents submitted for IDD individuals who receive a licensed DBHDS service within 90 days of their death. These may include but are not limited to medical records, nurses and progress notes, medication records, death certificates, autopsy results and DBHDS Office of Licensing documents. Reviews will focus on the sequence of events leading up to the individual’s death and relevant factors that may have contributed to the care of that individual prior to death, to include identification of patterns, trends, or variations. This position collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to achieve system wide patient safety outcomes related to behavioral health, developmental services, and physical health care, and may also assist with development of quality improvement activities.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience in a medical, psychiatric, or behavioral health clinical setting.
• Knowledge of related treatment for medical disorders that affect individuals.
• Excellent analytical and organizational abilities, with demonstrated time management and attention to detail skills.
• Knowledge of the continuum of services and support necessary to support the behavioral health/substance abuse treatment needs of individuals, including community-based, inpatient, and long-term care services and supports.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of the team, even when needs change in a complex environment.
• Proficient with medical management guidelines, terminology and disease processes.
• Attention to detail to review and assess medical records and relevant documents accurately and identify and discrepancies, issues and/or information gaps.
• Excellent analytical, critical thinking, organizational, lateral thinking, decision-making, and time management skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks ensuring accuracy of information, quality thresholds and deadlines are achieved.
• Proficiency with MS Office and web navigation, including virtual conference/meeting functionality (e.g. MS Teams, Google Meet, Zoom).

Additional Considerations

• Current RN license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Knowledge of the continuum of services and support necessary to support the behavioral health/substance abuse treatment needs of individuals, including community-based, inpatient, and long-term care services and supports.
• Experience in assisting with quality improvement initiatives.
