George Mason’s Gunston Hall, a National Historic Landmark located on scenic Mason Neck in Fairfax County, Virginia, is pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity for a creative and innovative individual to lead marketing and public relations operations at a growing and vibrant cultural organization. The Marketing Manager shall have the vision and expertise to develop and implement comprehensive, effective, and collaborative marketing, communications, and public relations initiatives for Gunston Hall.

The Marketing Manager develops and executes an integrated marketing and communications plan to advance the Gunston Hall’s brand identity, broaden awareness of Gunston Hall’s programs and activities, and increase the visibility of the Gunston Hall across key stakeholder audiences. Leads marketing and communications efforts with input from executive leadership, current leadership team, and others as appropriate while evaluating the effectiveness of current and potential initiatives. Assesses current capacity for implementing plan and identifies additional resources that may be needed for successful implementation within the scope of the budget.

The Marketing Manager and Public Relations is responsible for achieving and sustaining an acclaimed reputation for Gunston Hall, building and cultivating strong relationships with stakeholders, and effectively promoting the brand, mission, and activities of Gunston Hall to a broad and diverse audience. The Marketing Manager’s primary areas of focus include:

  • Ensuring the consistent application of Gunston Hall’s brand across all traditional and new media formats and platforms.
  • Planning and implementing strategic marketing, communications and public relations initiatives.
  • Developing and managing the agency's Social Media Plan.
  • Oversee the development and publication of agency social media content, ensuring accuracy and timely responses to feedback.
  • Track and monitor social media engagement and seek improvements where needed.
  • Collaborating with agency office areas to determine effective platforms and to organize, synchronize, and post articles, employment opportunities, and notices of events of interest to the public, other federal, state, and local government agencies, volunteers, current staff, and prospective employees.
  • Coordinating media relations.
  • Tracking and reporting on key performance indicators in the social media space.
  • Cultivating beneficial relationships and partnerships.
  • Communicating marketing messages, projects, and plans in an effective, professional, and timely manner to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Create, support, and sustain a collaborative environment in which a unified team works for excellence.
  • Timely execution of marketing responsibilities to ensure organizational goals and mission.
  • Develop policies for both internal and external communications for approval by leadership.
  • Track external public environment for potential risk to brand.
  • Coordinate media responses with the Executive Director and other staff, as appropriate. Occasionally serve as a designated spokesperson, when designated.
  • Create and design social media content, including videos and reels. The ability to use editing and design software such as Canva, InDesign, Meta, Microsoft Suite, Constant Contact, and other similar platforms is required.
  • Act as the primary point of contact, admin, and poster to the Gunston Hall website.

Additionally, the Marketing Manager and Public Relations will be responsible for:

  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring marketing and communication plans consistent with the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Researching and analyzing community and audience demographics.
  • Producing and publishing Gunston Hall’s e-newsletter, along with additional monthly email blasts.
  • Writing content for press releases, calendar postings, the website, blogs, and similar products.
  • Maximizing relationships with tourism, hospitality, media, and business partners.
  • Documenting and measuring the success of marketing and public relations initiatives.
  • Working closely with appropriate staff and committees in support of departmental and organizational goals.
  • Generating materials for board, promotional, and government affairs initiatives.

In performing these duties, the Marketing Manager will demonstrate creativity, innovation, the ability to work as part of a high-functioning team, and exemplary communication skills.

  • Leading initiatives that maximize the brand, enhance reputation, and drive guest participation.
  • Experience implementing agency-wide brand standards.
  • Experience maximizing both paid and organic social media and other digital content.
  • Exemplary communication, writing, and graphic design skills.

  • Experience creating, supporting, and sustaining an environment in which a unified team works for excellence.
  • Success identifying and achieving goals, as well as meeting targeted deadlines.

Additional Considerations

  • Considerable knowledge in marketing, communications, journalism, museum studies or a related field is required.
  • Experience in marketing, communications, and public relations, or a comparable combination of education and experience, is required.
  • Knowledge and experience specific to museums or historic sites is preferred.
  • A passion for Gunston Hall, history, historic sites, and associated themes and topics is beneficial.
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays and/or evenings as needed.
  • Must be able to travel out of town as needed
