Job Duties

• The Earth Science Teacher will design and deliver engaging, research-based instruction aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning to meet the diverse developmental needs of all students.
• To foster academic growth, the teacher will maintain a respectful, safe, and student-centered learning environment.
• Additionally, they will analyze student data and assessment results to refine daily instruction to improve student outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in Earth Science; or earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university and completed a major in Earth science, geology, or environmental science with a minimum of 32 semester hours in Earth sciences, including at least one course in each of the following areas: structural geology, petrology, paleontology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy/space science; or earned an endorsement in another science discipline and completed at least 18 semester hours in Earth sciences, including at least one course in each of the following areas: structural geology, petrology, paleontology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy/space science.
• Licensure: Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License with an endorsement(s) in Earth Science.

Additional Considerations

• Experience as an Earth Science Teacher in a secondary setting.
• Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred.
• Knowledge of DJJ and DHRM policies and procedures and the ability to meet DHRM-established physical demands.
