Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is recruiting for a Secondary Math Specialist to provide highly complex professional, analytical, and/or technical expertise in the area of mathematics.

The Secondary Math Specialist would be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Plan, organize, identify, and implement programs, activities, workshops, and meetings for school administrators, supervisors, curriculum coordinators, and teachers of mathematics on topics relevant to the implementation of Mathematics Standards of Learning, secondary mathematics instruction, implementation of high-quality instructional materials, and current trends and pedagogy that impact student achievement.
  • Work directly with staff in the Office of School Quality to support professional learning and mathematics curricular support to school divisions.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Special Education to ensure that professional training opportunities are provided to address inclusive instruction in mathematics for students with special needs.
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Multilingual Learners to ensure that professional training opportunities are provided to address the needs of all students in evidence-based reading research and instructional practices aligned with best practices in language acquisition.
  • Plan, organize, implement, coordinate, and monitor statewide K-12 projects that promote mathematics education projects or initiatives.
  • Respond to requests from school divisions and regions for professional training in alignment with the mathematics and STEM content related needs.
  • Develop, implement, review, and administer materials, guidelines, and programs for alignment with the Mathematics Standards of Learning as well as, projects, activities, and services that impact statewide mathematics achievement.
  • Attend to routine activities of the Office and other tasks approved by the Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based reading research, the most up to date mathematics practices, and K-12 mathematics education with a focus on quality professional development.
  • Recognized ability as an expert in mathematics education, with comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based mathematics research and instructional practices.
  • Considerable experience with the development and implementation of mathematics curricula, instructional and assessment resources, and professional development.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning program, local school divisions, state and local government policies and procedures, and state agency functions.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Highly organized and able to independently manage time and workload, adjust work schedules to meet new or emerging priorities, meet schedules consistently, forecast developing trends, and work collaboratively with and lead staff members, in both K-12 and higher education, in complex initiatives.
  • Skills in utilizing computer software for word processing, graphical presentation, databases, spreadsheets, and other technological systems and resources to complete assigned responsibilities.

Additional Considerations

  • An advanced degree within the discipline of mathematics or mathematics education is preferred.
  • Experience at the central office level or in another leadership position is preferred.
  • Experience in professional development, project management, resource allocation, and budgeting is preferred.
  • Experience in developing K-12 Mathematics educational programs or services as well as program administration and long-range planning is preferred.
  • Experience working with institutes of higher education to develop and/or manage K-12 Mathematics education projects or initiatives is desired.
