This position has a hybrid work schedule with three days per week working in the office in downtown Richmond, VA.

The Technology division in the Department of Accounts (DOA) is seeking a qualified state employee for a Senior DevOps Engineer role. 

DOA’s mission is to provide a uniform system of accounting, financial reporting, and internal control adequate to protect and account for the Commonwealth’s financial resources, while supporting and enhancing the recognition of Virginia as the best managed state in the union.

Job Duties

The Senior DevOps Engineer plays a key role at the Department of Accounts by leading the design, implementation, and management of infrastructure and web application deployment processes that support the Commonwealth’s financial and administrative non-Cardinal applications. Working closely with the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) and infrastructure partners, this position ensures secure, scalable, and highly available environments through modern DevOps practices and automation frameworks. This role requires strong Windows server administration, SQL server administration, and Web Application support, and a focus on security and compliance with state government standards.

Key Responsibilities:
• Ensure the availability, scalability, and performance of the agency’s non-Cardinal web applications and infrastructure through robust automation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of deployment pipelines.
• Design, implement, and optimize advanced cloud-native and on-premises architecture solutions that support both new development projects and ongoing system enhancements.
• Provide expert-level troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex infrastructure and application issues, collaborating closely with development and operations teams.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to align infrastructure strategy and operations with the agency’s evolving technology goals and business needs.
• Champion best practices in configuration management, and infrastructure automation to improve operational efficiency and resilience.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience managing and architecting infrastructure solutions to deliver highly available systems.
• Expert in Windows Server administration and SQL Server management.
• Strong understanding of security monitoring, backup, and disaster recovery best practices.
• Proficient in supporting Web Application Firewalls (WAF), High Availability architecture, load balancing, and system integration.
• Skilled in advanced troubleshooting of complex web application, server, database, security, and network issues.
• Demonstrated ability to lead high-impact incident resolution. Experience in multi-level vulnerability remediation.

Additional Considerations

The following experience is preferred for this position:
• End User Support experience, inclusive of directly resolving issues
• Active Directory experience at a Tier-3 level
• Configuration Management experience
• Adobe ColdFusion server management experience
• VITA SEC 530 compliance experience
• Azure DevOps experience
• Git experience
• SharePoint administration experience
• Previous Virginia state government experience

This position has a hybrid work schedule with three days per week working in the office in downtown Richmond, VA.

May be required to perform additional duties as assigned. May be required to assist in the event of an emergency. There may be occasional needs to work outside of normal scheduled hours to meet department demands or deadlines.
