Job Duties
The Federal Accountability Unit is a newly established Unit in the Office of the Attorney General through the Office of the Solicitor General and the Civil Division.
Attorneys in this position will serve as part of this federal accountability unit that will engage in affirmative litigation on behalf of the Commonwealth. The Unit's work will focus on challenging federal actions that threaten to harm the rights and interests of Virginians, Virginia’s state agencies and entities, and the Commonwealth. The attorney in this position will be expected to provide both legal advice and litigation services to a wide variety of state agencies impacted by federal overreach and threats to democracy.
Applicants to the Office of the Solicitor General should have strong skills and experience in brief writing and oral advocacy. Such applicants will have demonstrated appellate capabilities, preferably with some experience at the trial level as well. We are looking for attorneys who combine sharp legal strategy with a genuine commitment to public service.
This position can be based in Richmond, Virginia office or any regional office, Virginia Beach, Fairfax, Abingdon, or Roanoke, Virginia. The position will report directly to the Deputy Solicitor General serving as Chief of the Section and the Solicitor General.
This is a political appointment position.
Minimum Qualifications
• Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team.
• Seeking applicants with both a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience for Assistant Solicitor General and those with more than seven (7) years for Deputy Solicitor General roles in this Section.
• Litigation experience should include affirmative litigation at the trial and appellate level.
• Excellent interpersonal skills are required, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills, technical drafting skills, and the ability to analyze and manage complex cases.
• All candidates must be admitted to or able to waive into the Virginia State Bar.
