Job Description:

The Department of Juvenile Justice is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth and strengthen families and communities across the Commonwealth.

DJJ’s Division of Education is seeking a qualified professional to serve as Lead School Safety Officer. This position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and supervision of School Safety Officers to ensure a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment. The Lead School Safety Officer serves as the primary point of contact for safety personnel, coordinates emergency preparedness and response activities, enforces school safety policies and procedures, and fosters positive relationships among students, staff, and external partners. This position plays a critical role in identifying and mitigating potential safety risks, managing crisis situations, and supporting behavioral interventions to promote a respectful, inclusive, and positive school climate.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
High school diploma or equivalent

Certification: Must possess or be eligible for Virginia DCJS School Security Officer (SSO)
Certification within 60 days of hire; maintain recertification every 2 years.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of security experience.

Additional Considerations

Associate degree or coursework in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Security Management, Homeland Security, or related field preferred. Minimum of 1 year of supervisory or management experience in the area of security preferred. Experience working with juveniles in school, residential, or secure environments preferred.
