Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is recruiting for a Part Time Physical Ed Specialist to provide leadership and oversight for creating a comprehensive and effective technical assistance infrastructure that enhances the capacity of teachers and program leaders and provides ongoing support for the latest scientific research on optimizing learning and pedagogical expertise to enhance the quality and effectiveness of K12 Physical Education instruction across the Commonwealth.
The Physical Ed Specialist would be responsible for the following duties:
- Interpreting and assessing policies, programs, regulations, and reports of the Department of Education, other state agencies, the State Board of Education, and federal agencies and communicating interpretations to communities, school divisions, and the public in general.
- Providing specialized analytical and technical assistance (information, reports, presentations, reviews, and explanatory materials) related to accreditation, budget, and policy issues.
- Providing specialized technical assistance on issues related to the teacher education and licensure.
- Coordinating the review and revision process of the Physical Education Standards of Learning as prescribed by the Code of Virginia and as directed.
- Coordinating, developing, and reviewing materials, guidelines, and programs for alignment with the Physical Education Standards of Learning to improve achievement.
- Coordinating the review and revision process of the Physical Education Curriculum Frameworks/Instructional Guides, as necessary, to align with the current Physical Education Standards of Learning.
- Coordinating, planning, organizing, developing, identifying, and implementing programs, activities, workshops, and meetings for school administrators, supervisors, curriculum coordinators, and teachers on topics dealing with physical education, technology, and evidence-based pedagogy that may impact student achievement.
Minimum Qualifications
- Comprehensive knowledge of Physical Education standards, Va Code, and Board of Education requirements.
- Considerable knowledge of evidence-based pedagogical approaches, current trends, research, and best practices in physical education.
- Considerable knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning review process, local school division responsibilities, state and local government policies, and state agency functions.
- Considerable experience delivering professional development and managing and scaling projects.
- Considerable knowledge of resource allocation, budgets, grant writing, and management.
- Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly, manage time and workload, adjust work schedules to meet new or emerging priorities, meet schedules consistently, forecast developing trends, and work collaboratively with other agencies and lead staff on complex initiatives.
- Skills in utilizing computer software for word processing, graphical presentation, databases, spreadsheets, and other technologies to complete assigned responsibilities.
- Ability to define problems and apply problem-solving techniques to complex educational issues related to physical education; to apply research methods; to work effectively with support staff and teams of professionals; to manage the completion of multiple assignments and/or projects with critical deadlines; and to coordinate, critique, and edit work products of a diverse staff of technical and professional experts.
- Recognized as an expert in physical education.
Additional Considerations
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an undergraduate degree in K12 physical education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. An advanced degree in curriculum and instruction, education leadership, school counseling, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience in developing physical education curriculum, making cross-curricular connections and long-range program planning is desirable.
- Experiences in delivering staff development for teachers, working with professional organizations, and promoting staff wellness initiatives and physical education life skills programming for local school divisions is desired.
