Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a Program Supervisor to manage a Produce Safety Program for the Office of Dairy and Foods in the Division of Animal and Food Industry Services. Under the leadership of the Program Manager, this position will direct a statewide farm level Produce Safety Program that is supported by a federal grant. The position will provide management, supervision, direction and support to the Produce Safety Program Staff and the Rapid Response Team Coordinator. Program activities include management of and compliance with all requirements of the Produce Safety and Rapid Response team federal grants, administering all produce related laws and regulations; implementing and directing a farm level inspection program that will protect the public from adulterated and misrepresented produce while simultaneously promoting produce safety and coordinating emergency response activities with respect. Provides leadership to the Virginia Rapid Response team. In addition, this individual establishes and effectively manages the program’s human and financial resources. Routine partnering and interaction with Virginia’s produce industry, federal/state officials, enforcement organizations, special interest groups, academia and the general public is also required. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth’s telework policy.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of food science and food and produce safety principles and practices, basic knowledge of emergency response and ICS. Knowledge of and ability to interpret applicable laws and regulations. Experience in budget development, and financial analysis. Must possess excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work well with the food industry, the public, and other regulatory agencies. Solid computer skills are needed with experience using standard business applications such as Microsoft Office and the internet.
Additional Considerations
Ability to supervise others and personnel management. Demonstrated experience working in a regulatory environment with knowledge of federal and/or state government business processes. A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include food science, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, environmental health or a related field.
