Job Duties
Virginia Tax’s Office of Compliance is in search of multiple individuals who are interested in a career in public service as a Tax Examiner. This position is responsible for ensuring tax compliance with the laws of Virginia by examining state individual income tax returns. This entails reviewing both state and federal tax information to determine potential tax liabilities and explaining the results to the taxpayers. It is necessary to understand the individual income tax laws, filing requirements and demonstrate good communication skills, computer skills, and the ability to prioritize and work both independently and in a team environment.
As a Tax Examiner, you will:
• Analyze Virginia state individual income tax returns for accuracy and compliance with state tax laws
• Determine taxpayer liability through various audit programs based on federal and state tax information
• Communicate with taxpayers, review tax liabilities, and educate taxpayers on filing procedures and regulations
• Prepare and submit all reports completely, accurately, and timely
• Manage caseload to ensure customer service levels are high
• May be required to perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
General knowledge of federal and Virginia tax laws and forms with a concentration in individual income tax
Experience preparing, reviewing, or examining individual income tax returns at the state or federal level,
Document work accurately, manage assigned cases and deadlines, and work independently and with a team of colleagues.
Communicate findings clearly and professionally, both in writing and when speaking with taxpayers.
Use electronic records, email, and spreadsheets to complete and track work.
Handle confidential taxpayer information in compliance with all organizational policies and procedures as well as state laws and regulations.
Ability to prioritize duties and handle multiple tasks while maintaining customer focus in a fast- paced environment
Experience with case-management systems or spreadsheet functions used to organize and analyze records.
Experience using a Windows-based computer and Microsoft Office Suite
Experience handling large call volumes while maintaining high customer service levels
Additional Considerations
Working knowledge of accounting and audit terminology, techniques, and formal theory of accounting
Experience researching tax or other regulatory requirements and reconciling discrepancies in financial records.

After training, this position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule which consists of two telework days per week at home and three days in the office based on internet availability and speed.
This position is located in our Central Office in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
Working hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:15pm.
The salary range for this role is $45,739 - $51,500, commensurate with knowledge, skill and experience.
As a condition of employment, all employees must reside within 50 miles of their assigned Virginia Tax office, regardless of whether the position is onsite, hybrid, or approved for remote work. Employees must be able to report to their assigned office as required for training, meetings, operational needs, or other business purposes.
